About Us
Central Department of Sociology (CDS) at Tribhuvan University (TU) is a leading academic institution in Nepal, offering high-quality postgraduate programs in Sociology. Located in the historic core of University Campus premises, the CDS serves as the main hub for sociological teaching, research, and publications in Nepal. Originally established in 1981 as the combined department of Sociology and Anthropology the CDS became an independent acadedmic entity since 2015.
CDS offers an MA program (four semesters, followed by a thesis research) and an MPhil-PhD programs (two semesters of coursework, followed by a thesis research) in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at TU. Its faculty continuously engage in independent research and collaborate with universities from Germany, the UK, the USA and the other countries. Additionally, CDS, along with the Sociology Subject Committee, supports and coordinates MA programs in 35 different colleges and Bachelor of Arts (BA) programs in over 350 colleges across Nepal.
The CDS is the premier higher education institution in Nepal with such a broad academic scope and influence for the discipline of Sociology.
